January 14, 2012 - Website Update
Caveman Agent has a new website! I've been working on this for about two weeks off and on, and while I'm not sure everything works perfectly, it is good enough to launch. There was nothing severely wrong with the old layout, but it was a little limited. Caveman Agent has grown in terms of readership and the scope of the comic, and it was time for a change. The new design is larger, and gives the comics more breathing room while also providing more space below the comic for other content. The design is a little cleaner overall, as the background of the previous site was sort of overwhelming.
This is the third revision of the website since I started the comic. The very first version was hosted on blogger, minimally modifying a plain blogger template. I liked blogger a lot, but it was always temporary as the format does not allow for any real customization. The blogger site is still live, and actually gives my current domain about 100 visits per month, which is nice.
After blogger I designed my own site from scratch, as wordpress was too complex for me to customize easily. I added a few interesting features, like the automatic bookmark, and let users commenters select characters from the comic as avatars (which has not really been used that much...). All the rest of the changes were in the graphic design, keeping the layout mostly unchanged from blogger.
The new Caveman Agent website keeps some of the old, but adds a few new features. First, the comics are given the full width of the layout, which is nice. Since Caveman Agent has no words, the homepage always felt a little empty, so I've added a 'commentary' track to the comments, which is activated by one of the buttons to the right of the comic. There is a lag between the commentary and the most recent comics, so you still have to figure out what is going on by yourself! There is some new content in the side bar, including a spot where I'll offer advertising through Project Wonderful. This is an experiment, and we'll see what happens.
On the back-end, there is a better spam filter so the level of the spam should go down a great deal. Also, you can now add links to your comments, as well as reply to other comments... these features should have been added a long time ago. The URLs to the comics and blog posts are now in readable format, (i.e. www.cavemanagent.com/comic/sold/ as opposed to www.cavemanagent.com/index.php?comic=1), which was a painful rewrite. I may write a blog post about this at some point.
That's about everything . There is a store, but nothing in the store yet. That should change sometime soon.
Thanks to everyone who reads this comic. The site is growing because of the readers, a year ago I wouldn't have thought that Caveman Agent would attract such a good following. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think of the new layout!
